i'm good with my hands

so i finally decided that i wanted to put a base on the curiosity cabinet to give it some height and up the wow factor on it but i couldn't find what i was looking for or it was the wrong size if i did find something.. very annoying

so a couple of weeks ago we bought a new bed to replace our old bed that broke from ikea and the way most ikea beds work is that they have wooden slats that go across the bed so the mattress sits on the frame. the new slats are fancy composite wood that are curved so it gives the mattress some springiness to it but the old slats are just plain ol' slats of wood. never one to throw something out that could be used for something else, the old slats sat on the bedroom floor out of the way for a month until last wednesday when i had the thought that i could just recycle those slats and build the base for the cabinet myself. so i lugged everything over to my parents house yesterday and set up shop in my dads workshop for 3 hours and this is the result...

the first shot is some of the slats i used to build the base, the second shot is the completed base in my parents living room and the third shot is the base with the curiosity cabinet on top. thank gosh for another short work week and another 4day weekend so this weekend i can decoupage the base to match the dark brown of the cabinet and screw the top cabinet onto the base and decoupage the entire thing to look like one complete piece of furniture.

anyways.. the cabinet is really impressive now, it stands about 6 feet high now and once its all the same color, it's going to look even better. my mind is already racing with ideas of what to put in the base now.. i saw a 18th centuray engraving of different kinds of birds all perched on a single vertical branch and since i have a collection of feathered birds i'm going to attach a branch in the center of the middle shelf and attach all the bird collection to it.
